Via everywhere (Chicagoist, Gawker, The New York Times, etc.), “Rogue Sociologist” Sudhir Venkatesh has written a book where he talks about, like, economics and kicking a crackhead and stuff. This makes Venkatesh the second U of C person to gain widespread fame by cultivating a reputation as a rebel. Academics: take heed. English professors? I suggest you read poetry — with Satanists. Mathematicians should start doing proofs while riding on the backs of dangerous animals, such as komodo dragons, and biologists could go rogue by working with inorganic substances like giant machetes. Above all, don’t forget the leather jacket or the Jimmy Dean-like glare! We’re sure if we asked Dr. Venkatesh what we were rebelling against, he’d ask us what we got.
